Big Guy Small Dog Blog feels the need to acknowledge The Source, the inspiration if you like, for its existence. I began this blog when I spied a Lemmy look-a-like in Camden: leather-clad, grizzled, a bloke – with a petite frou frou dog on a lead. Big Guy Small Dog Blog leapt into life with a yap on the spot.

Last week, on a whim, I googled ‘Lemmy + Chihuahua’. This is what I came up with.

Perhaps it wasn’t a look-a-like after all.

RIP big fella.

The Fun Dog Show, NW1

I pounced on Hunter and his glorious bearded owner at the Fun Dog Show in Primrose Hill recently. 

True to Chihuahua form, Hunter is a legend at his local pub in Shoreditch where (other probably bearded) people back up against the wall when he arrives.

Why?

Because Hunter recently wiped the floor with a giant Japanese Akita. Thats why.

West 14th & 8th Avenue, New York

So there I am, let loose on the streets of NYC when an apparition appears before me: Jeff and his tiny Chihuahua Kiki. In a case of mistaken identity, Kiki was once chased out of a shop by a Bodega Cat.

What is a Bodega Cat? It is a feline employed by NYC convenience store owners to identify and kill rats. 

Guiltily, Big Guy Small Dog Blog can't help liking the idea of cats manning shops.

Tompkins Square Park, Avenue A, New York

In a first for Big Guy Small Dog Blog, I publish not one, but two pictures of the same man-dog combo. This is Martin and his Chihuahua Rico, two-time winner of the Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. When Martin and his girlfriend broke up, he got Rico and she got the rabbit. In answer to the inevitable question, yes, the rabbit and the dog do miss each other.

 

The reason for two pics? In the first, Martin and his dog struck what I called a Kraftwerk-like pose. In picture two, he is laughing because unbeknownst to me; the screen saver on his phone is Kraftwerk at Coachella. Great minds think alike and all that.

 

 

Hotel Nhow, Milan

 

It’s been a while since I updated my blog. What can I stay? The standard of Big Guys with Small Dogs took a temporary dip. Until I arrived in Milan that is; a world where even the security guard at Hotel Nhow was working ‘a look’.

No sooner had I muttered ‘I’m bound to run into a big guy with a small dog here’ than this apparition appeared before me. He didn’t speak any English. I don’t speak any Italian. But somehow I managed to communicate my deep need to photograph him (a sensation) and his Chihuahua (almost took my arm off). Finalmente!

Notorious N.E.R.O of Primrose Hill, London NW1

 
I hate to admit it but today’s dog is hands down the best Chihuahua I’ve encountered so far. As Nero sat and let the wind blow through his fur, his owner described a dog that was once so vicious; he was regularly to be found hanging from the necks of (presumably quite surprised) Alsatians.

Patrick – who is also a dog trainer - has loved him into submission and nice manners. ‘He is a good boy now’ he said. Apropos of nothing, Patrick’s girlfriend keeps Great Danes.

The North London Tavern, NW6

 
I found Doran and his Chihuahua lurking in the murky darkness of the North London Tavern. Is this your dog? I demanded to know. Indeed he is. In fact, Winston is what his owner refers to as An Unplanned Dog. He originally belonged to two friends who were going through a rough patch. They asked Doran if he could take care of Winston 'for a couple of weeks' and the rest is history. 

Doran concedes that Winston probably isn’t great for his hetero credentials and that had he had a choice, he wouldn’t have picked a Chihuahua in a million years. However, they enjoy going to the pub together. What more could a man want from a pet? They looked like a cute couple sharing a pint of Guinness to me. 

Camden Town, NW1

Is it a conspiracy? I don't know but I can guarantee you this, the second you have read this post, you will see them everywhere. Men walking tiny dogs. Great big hulking Lemmy look-a-likes walking teeny tiny Paris Hilton style pooches. I kid you not. Its an epidemic. I set out to discover the truth about this. Is Staffordshire Bull Terrier Man a thing of the past? Has Post Millennium Man finally come out of the closet? Or are cute dogs all just part of a cunning plan to attract mugs like me? Let’s find out.

I bagged my first 'victim' yesterday in Camden. I was too excited to ask his name as I could barely take my eyes off Milo, his tiny orange dog. Nor did I ask what breed of dog Milo is but his owner did impart this imformation. Milo is his girlfriends dog and at first, he was mortified about walking him but now they like each other, he doesn't mind at all. In fact, I would go so far as to say this about Milo and his human friend. They looked terribly happy together.
