Big Guy Small Dog Blog: bringing you cute big guy small dog combos since 2010 👊. I was only too happy to be side tracked by this gorgeous duo as the dying embers of summer settled on Portobello Road one Friday afternoon last October.
Yes, its taken me 3 months to post this picture. No, I can’t recall their names. Yes, we laughed our heads off for a good while before heading our separate ways into Autumn. There is much joy to be had from chatting with ‘strangers’. 🐶

As beautiful as they are, Alsatians are not posh dogs to a Londoner. They are working dogs. They were also the drug dealer’s dog of choice in the 1980’s. So it surprised me when a young dog walker outside Tompkins Square Park Dog Run informed me that the owners of the Alsatian attached to the end of his leash were so Upper East Side fancy, they’d made him promise never to even walk their pet past Tompkins Square Park Dog Run, lest some East Village juju rub off on their little prince.
As said Alsatian poked his nose through the railings and gazed longingly at hounds of every size, shape and color throwing themselves around the run, we silently acknowledged that a Rubicon had been crossed. At which, he slipped the leash and released the little darling into the run to play with new friends.
I cannot deny this Londoner laughed out loud.
None of this has anything to do with today’s picture but Big Guy Small Dog Blog was half asleep on the morning we bumped into this lovely duo so I can’t tell you anything about their genesis as a couple. Take the bad dog tale as compensation.

Zoltan & Mateo.
I scribbled the names down in my notebook and I’ll be honest. I can’t remember which is which but they’re both cute so who cares.
‘I’m straight by the way’ Zoltan – or Mateo – told me. ‘The deal was if I got a bike, she got a dog’.
Would you have chosen this particular dog given a choice?
‘No.
But I love him now’.
Happy late Valentines ❤️

Back in the day, ‘Orpington Man’ was a term used by marketers to (condescendingly) describe a middle-of-the-road sector of society.
No more! Today’s Orpington Man is quirky, perky, manly and the owner of a small fluffy dog.
‘He belongs to my wife' quipped my interviewee. ‘But he loves me more’.
I wasn't going to argue.

‘Shitzu’s are loyal dogs, good dogs…they love their owners. Especially this one!’ Is Lilley’s brawny owner biased I wondered? ‘Have you ever seen a dog laugh’, he asked? Not as yet I answered. He then proceeded to flip tiny Lilly over right there on the pavement and tickle her belly.
Reader, the little dog laughed.

Big Guy Small Dog Blog was back on familiar territory last week and it didn’t take long to hit the jackpot. It turns out today’s dog had hit a few jackpots of his own recently. Young Colman has a penchant for bigger dogs and recently attempted ‘relations’ with a noodle*.
‘He is king of the incompatible relationship’ sighed his weary owner Charles.
*a cross between a poodle and a Newfoundland i.e. huge.
